I was reminded of Henri Nouwen’s Inner Voice of Love. It has become a personal favorite of mine, but it was initially just a private journal.

Comment on Theology as Teaching and Contemplation by Daniel H Martins https://livingchurch.org/covenant/81930/#comment-18410 Tue, 15 Oct 2024 02:46:33 +0000 https://livingchurch.org/?p=81930#comment-18410 Nathan, this is wonderful. Thank-you! It resonates with what I have been pondering for a number of years: How we might both initiatory catechesis and theological formation toward ordination less systematic and more driven by our communal prayer and worshi—the actual texts that we hear and sing and pray. I hope this project of yours “leaks” (or, perhaps, “bleeds”) into your teaching. Your students would be immeasurably blessed.

Comment on Defending the Church’s Language for the Trinity, with Gregory of Nyssa by Christopher R Seitz https://livingchurch.org/covenant/defending-the-churchs-language-for-the-trinity-with-gregory-of-nyssa/#comment-18169 Sat, 12 Oct 2024 17:41:49 +0000 https://livingchurch.org/?p=81787#comment-18169 In reply to Terence Dougherty.

I believe Nyssa would regard “biblical authors” as agents divinely inspired in ways that are meant to direct our own thinking and acting, and not on direct analogy with ourselves (who impute all manner of things, to use your language here). “We are not prophets or apostles” but rather understand God rightly by receiving their particular testimony given in sacred scripture.

I thank the author for his helpful and clear essay.

Comment on I Hate That Hymn by Sandra L Macfie https://livingchurch.org/covenant/i-hate-that-hymn/#comment-18160 Sat, 12 Oct 2024 16:14:42 +0000 https://livingchurch.org/2021/04/14/i-hate-that-hymn/#comment-18160 Perhaps this might be somewhat applicable and if it doesn’t hit the subject dead on, it might just touch a little at the sides.

These are the words of a man whose name I have momentarily forgotten. He did not seem to be worthy of his calling; he changed his form of faith several times, but if this saying is truly attributed to him, I would say, he was at moments, channeling true wisdom.

“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.”

If I am slightly misquoting this, please forgive, but I think the very end of this highlights Father Schlossberg’s finish, when he says, “That would be my little gift to them. But that would probably amount to the very best offering I made to God that Sunday.”
